Awakening Through Study and Practice

DI Logo Lg2

The Spirit Rock Dharma Institute offers in-depth study of the teachings and practices of the Buddha and the Insight Meditation lineage, along with professional training and continuing education. We created the Dharma Institute as a response to the needs of students at all levels for a path of sequential study and practice. Complementing Spirit Rock’s retreats and shorter events, we also offer classes, trainings, and intensives in Buddhist practice, along with accessible wellness and professional development courses.

At the Dharma Institute, there are two streams of study: Buddhist Study and Practice, and Practice in the World.

The heart of the Dharma Institute, our Buddhist Study and Practice stream, includes three stages, roughly corresponding to levels of experience in practice:

  • Setting Out on the Path
  • Foundations of Insight Meditation
  • The Heartwood of the Holy Life

Crafted around the core Dharma principle of the Noble Eightfold Path, in each stage you will take courses covering the three traditional areas of Buddhist practice: sīla (ethics & wise engagement), samādhi (meditation & mindfulness), and pañña (insight & wisdom).

The Practice in the World stream offer a wide range of electives in mindfulness, Buddhist psychology, social engagement, and professional development, many providing Continuing Education Credits.

Bringing mindfulness, Buddhist psychology, and insight into every part of your life

The Spirit Rock Dharma Institute: Awakening through Study & Practice

The Buddhist path is both ancient and personal—a spiritual tradition woven from centuries of wisdom, yet always unfolding in the intimacy of our own lives. The Dharma Institute carries this lineage forward, offering a structured framework for engaging the Buddha’s teachings through study, reflection, and practice.

Interweaving with our core retreats, Dharma Institute classes, intensives, and on-demand courses deepen your study and insight, and bring the transformative practice of the Dharma to every part of your life.

Two Program Areas

The Buddha taught using a model known as the “Gradual Training,” based on the Eightfold Path, beginning with generosity and ethics, and continuing into meditation and wisdom inquiry. Our core curriculum in Buddhist Study & Practice follows this sequence, with each level of study containing classes in sīla (ethics), samādhi (meditation), and pañña (wisdom).

Alongside this systematic training, we offer a wide range of classes in mindfulness, psychology, and professional development in our second program area, Practice in the World. This diverse collection offers flexible, Dharma-informed programs that support well-being, healing, and meaningful engagement in our personal and professional lives.
