About LafEnergy.org

This website aims to be an ever-growing source of practical information to help people and businesses...

  • Reduce the amount of energy they get from fossil fuels (coal, oil, natural gas).
  • Increase their use of renewable energy (solar, wind, geothermal).
  • Save money on energy bills by investing in energy efficiency (which pays back over time in energy savings).

There are both economic and environmental reasons to shift from fossil fuels to a clean energy economy.

This non-commercial website is the personal project of Larry Miloshevich.  I'm a regular guy who has made some progress on the clean energy transition in my own life and in my community of Lafayette, Colorado.

  • My house uses 1/4 the electricity of the average U.S. house (about 160 kWh per month), and more than 100% of it comes from solar panels on my roof (which I love!).
  • My natural gas bill for heating is always lower than $55 per month (usually much lower).

I believe there are many others out there who want to embrace clean energy but may not really know where to begin.

Purpose #1.  I did a lot of research and experimentation to answer questions like these:  Does it make sense to replace a still-working older refrigerator?  Or to add more attic insulation?  What type of lightbulbs should I use?  What are the advantages and disadvantages of solar panels?  Should I replace energy-hog appliances and lighting before installing solar panels?  The idea behind this website is to make good use of that hard-won knowledge by passing it on to others.  A few such pages are:  "The Refrigerator Story", "My Solar PV System", "Lighting Choices", "Lessons from an Energy Meter", and "Opt Out" (of unwanted mail, etc).

Other topics coming soon:  Where and How to Start?;  Home Weatherization;  Energy Efficiency vs Conservation.

Purpose #2 is to address such questions as "Why bother?" and "What exactly are Watts and kilowatt-hours (kWh)?".  I've also written a background essay called "Global Warming in a Nutshell", and accumulated some Energy-Related Articles that are a good starting point for exploring energy-related topics.

Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed citizens can change the world; indeed, it's the only thing that ever has.
